AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides thousands of Americans with an opportunity to give back to their communities. AmeriCorps members serve in nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. Since the program was created in 1994, over 270,000 individuals have served their communities and country as AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance, student-loan forbearance, health coverage, end of service education award, and child care for those who qualify.

Through partnership with Serve KY, the Kentucky Health Departments Association has been granted funding through the Federal AmeriCorps Agency to place AmeriCorps members in local health departments across the State of Kentucky. Members have a goal of increasing healthy outcomes of local communities and the program will also increase workforce in the public health field. AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to be trained and certified as Community Health Workers while serving in the four core programs identified under Public Health Transformation: WIC, HANDS, Harm Reduction and Health Education and Outreach.
MEMBERSHIP
KYPHA is placing AmeriCorps members to serve for a year at local health departments across the State of Kentucky in September 2025.
AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance, student loan forbearance (if eligible), and accrued interest payment on qualified student loans, while they serve. Upon successful completion of service, the member receives a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used to pay off existing student loans or to further the member’s education. KYPHA members also have the opportunity to become a Kentucky Certified Community Health Worker.
KYPHA members must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to satisfactorily pass Federal and State level background checks.
